Hosted Development Tools
For small groups or teams with developers spread all over the planet, we provide a suite of great tools that allow them to focus on coding, not system administration. Developing a complex system takes a lot more than one developer with an IDE- and we can give your managers confidence that their intellectual property is being professionally monitored and managed.
Each customer's development process has different needs- and they will often have some of the tools inhouse already. We usually take an a la carte approach, and identify the elements that make the most sense for the team's process. Tools that we make available include:
- Bugzilla: Issue Tracking System (version 2.20, includes estimated and actual hours tracking)
- VQWiki: Wiki software
- JRoller: Project Blogs
- OpenCMS: Client Extranet for hosted blogs
- Ant / Nant: build tool, allows us to script automated nightly builds
- CruiseControl / CruiseControl.NET: continuous integration tools
- Hosted Subversion / TortoiseSVN: source control
- JMeter: regression and load testing tool
- Nagios / BigSister : server monitoring
This is not an exclusive list; some clients have requested additional static code analysis and code coverage tools be integrated into the continuous integration system. We can also make staging environments available for testing java and .NET web applications; we have Windows 2003, SQL Server 2000 and 2005, and several Linux / MySQL / PostgresQL systems available for client use.
The services we offer are based on open source software, as those have traditionally had the highest quality levels and the most advanced features, particularly in the developer support area. This also gives our customers confidence that they are not paying for inflated licenses, and are able to control their intellectual property and support infrastructure without us. This means that our customers are often pleasantly surprised at how cost-effectively we can provide these services.
We work in two modes; we will either host these tools in our datacenter, or we will manage a dedicated server located in our customer's facility via a VPN connection. Customers will typically host with us when they don't wish to maintain their own infrastructure or when their development team is widely dispersed. We'll place a server at a customer's location when they have strong security needs, a centralized development group, and have good VPN software available.
